Oh man I did not think of the id thing, I just thought of Derek not feeling like he had anything else to offer them besides sexy and violent, but that level of projection just makes a lot of sense. And does give me a way to parse all the arm-breaking, which was rough stuff. "Subconscious self-harm" clicks better than anything else. It kind of sucks that one of the targets of that is Isaac, whose general level of emotional damage and alienation probably really resonates with some parts of Derek that aren't good.
I mean, does Derek know anyone who doesn't think he's a scary murderer on some level? Has he since his family died? Maybe he's putting out what people have wanted from him since he's a teenager. But right now he's pretty much the last surviving member of an entire culture, that must be just ungodly isolating. I'd be pretty guarded too.
Man, the thing is, on the one hand yessss and then cook him dinner, Stiles! Yay! but on the other hand I kind of wonder if Derek would accept being adopted at this point. I kind of feel like his attempts to help Scott are also his attempts to redeem his own younger self, the one who didn't get the help he needed at that age. It's definitely a part of his life where he acts altruistically, whereas Derek thinks everyone needs a clear life-and-death reason for helping Derek.
