Aw, Derek and his wrecked self-image :( He clearly thinks he's good at two things: 1) being really really good-looking 2) doing violence.
So he tries to make a pack, right? Because he wants to survive, and I think secretly wants to belong and be loved, because he's only (mostly) human. But the only things he thinks he has to offer are being really really good-looking (Erica) and doing violence (Isaac). Even though what those kids wanted too was to belong and be loved! Instead he's basically replicated his body ethic at them. (We don't see exactly what he offered Boyd, which makes it hard to parse, but Boyd had already worked out that Derek didn't make a great buddy by the time we found out that he'd gotten bitten).
Poor Derek. He is so messed up! And so bad at things. It makes me much fonder of him than it probably should. He actually tries to come through for Scott, and kind of succeeds, but that's probably because Scott has Stiles to do the actual brain-using part of not dying.
