Something like this, in episode 4, would have given us Jack and Ianto fighting for their lives. Which, even if it ended badly, would have meant they went down fighting. Wihch, in my humble opinion, is much better than going down drawing a line in the sand, however much, sometimes, lines in the sand need to be drawn.
