My immediate reactions were slightly delayed by my new housemate (like, 24-hours new) coming home right after it ended. We are at the slightly awkward small talk phase, so we had an hour of biography swapping while I kinda wished I was reading my flist's reactions to Torchwood instead.
First of all, OMG yay for new Torchwood! I was all aflutter as I sat down in front my actual TV set to watch some actual TV as and when it first aired. I cannot even remember when I last did that. I had to relearn which remote control did what. TV that isn't downloaded? O_o
I found Ianto's bewilderment about the new 'couple' status cute at first but slightly irritating after the 3rd or 4th iteration. I do not like my Jack/Ianto fix all domestic and cutesy, let's get back to the smouldering, ok? After the last radio play, does anyone else think they went straight home and had life-affirming commitment sex? Absofrigginglutely. That's when they became a capital c Couple, in my book. I am hoping they'll settle into it. Assuming everyone lives through the week.
I loved all the new backstory. Ok, so Ianto's council estate sister and the TV-addict kid and the grubby fella wasn't quite what I'd imagined. Is Ianto - *gasp* - working class? But he now has backstory, which makes me happy. And as I suspected from that weird episode about the circus freaks ('Out of The Rain'?) his dad is dead, and it also seems his mum isn't in the picture at all. His sister might grow on me; I did find her grilling him on his love life entertaining given her apparent glee, although it made me a bit uncomfortable that he seemed shamed. I'm trying to mentally rearrange him towards the more embarrassed end of the spectrum, but am not having much luck with that so far. Will have to rewatch (oh the hardship). I also dislike the 'it's not men it's just him' response, which is such a cop out, in my opinion. Own your feelings, man! If he thinks shagging a man does not make him bi, then I do not know what his definitions are based upon. I laughed out loud at the brother in law asking him about taking it up the arse, though, and his siter's reaction. Hee!
I also liked Gwen's 'NofucknobollockswellokaythenGREAT!' reaction to finding she was pregnant. I imagine that's quite accurate for a lot of women, then lather rinse repeat the emotions over the next 9 months. When Jack told Ianto they were having a baby I thought that Ianto might think Jack meant them, and then his face fell when Jack further explained. It's possible I may have read too much mpreg in my time. I also had odd thoughts when Jack was telling him at the bay that they needed a kid. Bad, brain. And there's me telling you that I don't like them all domestic. But if they could be undomestic with a cute little youngster in tow? That'd be ace, thanks. Find a way, please, universe.
Jack has a daughter and a grandson? Excellent. I was worried at first that the boy was his son and the woman his ex, and mightily relieved to hear her call him Dad. I like the idea of him having generations of relatives to look in on and to shower with some of that paternal love throughout the ages.
How entertaining is it that Jack and Ianto both go off to try and procure a child from their closet family, and both are told in no uncertain terms to forget it? Ianto's family clearly think he's flighty, which is quite the injustice. Jack's daughter has got him sussed though! I want to know how involved Jack was in her life up til now.
Jack getting killed, twice, and a bomb implanted in his stomach? NOT ON. I started feeling overprotective towards the team when Gwen told Owen and Tosh's photo good morning, and I am not yet ready for them to face mortal danger. The cute doctor betraying them is also NOT ON. I liked him! I wanted him to win his way back into thefamilyteam, and for nobody to ever really trust him and for it all to become antagonistic and slightly embittered. I like my workplace hostility, especially when it's coupled with the team-as-family thing.
Gwen going over the Severn Bridge into England made me laugh, too. Is that the first time we've seen her outside Wales?
The first time the kids screamed, I got goosebumps. Some of those children were freaky looking I do not know if it's nature being unkind, or good acting, or good directing. But they were legitimately frightening.
The new girl at the Home Office and her appallingly unprofessional view on confidentiality was fun. I am assuming she'll have a bigger role to play later in the week, because she didn't contribute anything - hardly even any exposition, unless you've never seen Torchwood at all. And even then it was a bit unnecessary. As someone who once did data entry for the NHS and looked up everyone ever as soon as the lab was empty... I can sympathise with her curiosity. Her boss-lady seemed very efficient, except for that lapse. I think the boss lady should run things, as the men around her looked like they wanted to cry. (Except for the one who was too excited about the transmission equipment. He gave me the creeps, and also should not be in charge of anything.)
What else? They are all still pretty, although I think GDL should've stopped eating so many pies rather sooner in preparation for the filming. His face was rather... slack. Like he was pudgy and the skin hasn't quite shrunk back. Also, Jack is looking older (and is it just me or is he a bit orange these days?), and Gwen's teeth were grey. Is she a smoker? Her teeth say yes, which is rather shaming given our reputation for bad teeth. You are an emissary, girl! Get them bleached!
In conclusion, I am high on Torchwood love.
Where is the missing scene fic for between the last radio show and this new ep? *taps foot*
